Brett Steenbarger

"It wasn't caring about my trading that made me trade better; it was not caring too much. When trading is front and center in our lives, it is all to easy to slip from wanting to make money to needing to make money. At that point, the trade control us. It took an emotional crisis to detach my ego from the market and focus on the really important things in life."

He is all about his stock trades... but I think it applies to so many things don't you? I like his blog. A lot. Even though I don't understand any of it!

Pineapples, mushy apples, and small apples...

Mushy apples - for some reason we seem only to be able to buy mushy apples this week... the kind that look good until you bite them. I like a crisp, juicy apple myself and when i think I have one and take a big bite of mush I am so disappointed! So today I sliced up the remaining apples and while it does that Virginia in January thing where it is 33 degrees and raining with a cool grey sky the kids and I are having baked apples with ice cream for lunch.

Nutritious I know.

I do not know why they do not have school today. They did not have school yesterday either.

I had just uploaded a "witty" photo in response to Tim's "witty" comment on my facebook page - but called upstairs - it seems Bitsy was discovered by her big sister - in the bathroom - filling the play tea set up with - uh-huh - toilet water. Lovely!

Tim's photo:
Peace Love And Pineapples

#344 Peace, Love, Pineapples

Because when I sent him an upload via the iphone of me at Dole my dearest's only comment was "nice pineapples" so I went back and took a picture with this T-shirt.

Hawaii pictures

So we arrived Saturday - got up at 3 something AM and left the East Coast and arrived in Hawaii around 5 in the afternoon. My amazing husband rented a Mountaineer for us using his Hertz points {do you love this? I got a free flight and reduced price car! thank you Dataxstream!} And we drove to the Marriott Time Share in Ko'Olina which is a resort about 30 minutes (give or take) from Honolulu area. Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous!

View from Suite

This was the view!
So the place was set up with an amazing master bedroom suite, a kitchen/living area and another bedroom off the side. Huge and nice. The first night the girls in the other room were woken up several times by a baby and so they called down and asked if there was a possibility of a room change. They moved us Tuesday morning. I have never been treated so nicely by staff any place. Everything they did, they did with courtesy and genuine niceness. So accommodating - but any way

The first day we went on a hike along a ridge trail - I will edit this later with the actual name -
awesome hike - challenging - but the view...

Ridge Hike

I think Monday (the days got blurred) we went to Dole Plantation and the North Shore. There is all kinds of "stuff" at Dole but we were focused... we wanted pineapple ice cream... and to play in the maze. The maze holds the Guinness Book of World Records record as the largest maze in the world. They have 8 stations inside for visitors to find. We found 3. By then it was hot and we'd been inside for 40 minutes and despite the ice cream we were hungry. It was cool though. I always thought pineapples grew on tree like plants. Nope. Low to the ground spiky things.

Dole Plantation

We also discovered while there that warm, caramelized, macadamia nuts are perhaps the very best snack/treat you can buy. I am now on the look out for a closer source although there is a possibility that by this time next year my friend Jamie may actually own a macadamia nut roaster/caramelizer thing...

We were then on a mission to the shrimp truck. The original Giovanni's Shrimp Truck where for $13.00 you get a plate of hot shrimp - the world's best sticky white rice - and a bottle of water.
I took some 600 pictures - I have to sort through to find those ones!

But I figure - for the moment anyway - you hate me enough already :-)

I am home again...

Today is the historical inaguartion of our president - President Obama. I pulled my kids out of school to watch it. I absolutely loved that his oldest daughter was taking her own video of the whole thing!

It is also my 13th wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary to me and Tim!!!

AND-

I just spent a "Saturday to Saturday" in Hawaii.
no really.
HAWAII!!!
The week before Christmas one of my friends {fellow preschool mom} called to say that one of four girls who was supposed to go on this trip was backing out. Did I want to take her place? The cost, for a week in Oahu, was travel there, 1/4 of the time share fees, and food. My husband is a frequent traveler - he traded in travel points and booked me a ticket and then put the itinerary in my stocking at Christmas. WHAT!?! I am going to Hawaii!?!

We did so much in one week... I could write on and on but I am still readjusting to home and my kids are readjusting to me being home. So I just thought I'd stop in and say "hi - I am back - it was AMAZING!"

better now

sorry about that. on occasion I step of the planet for a bit. I do have a struggle with privacy vs. bragging like a crazy woman and as the kids get slightly older it gets weirder... sorry.

anyway. I just spent a ridiculous amount of time on photobucket.com browsing images to introduce "the great tim" {not my husband} on the dxs blog and found this one, which I feel compelled to share.

Photobucket

mmm hmm. sums it all up right there.

Finishing up yesterday's thoughts...

I had actually wanted to post a photo or two before the two year old dragged me away from the computer... {what is wrong with people anyway? don't they know I'm connected to this cyber space thing? go get your own snack!}

My snake wrangler:

(oh and by the way. I have friends in counter terrorism who actually break down doors at night and drag people out of bed. Download one of these pictures of my beautiful kids and I will find you. And then will drag you off to some cinder block hole in the wall. And I will personally break every bone in your body. Because I didn't go through hell learning to break boards the same thickness as your ribs so you could be a freak and drag my kids into it.)
Okay. please resume normal programming...

on second thought, perhaps I am not in the mood to post photos.

Herp Club

My now 5th grader has been a member of her club since 3rd grade. Herp club refers to herpetology club which refers to reptile club in case you, like I, didn't know what herpetology was. mm hmm. She is our snake wrangler.

recipes for cabbage...
there is a bumper crop of local cabbage this year... would love to take advantage!
Also...
sweet potatoes. there are a ton of local sweet potatoes.

New Ways to serve them would be much welcomed!

Grandpa Howie's Pancakes

Grandpa Howie was into good food. Slow food. Food that tasted good and was good for you. This is his pancake recipe that he got from I don't know where.

1 1/2 cup oatmeal (grind - which I never do because I like the texture of the rolled oats)
2 cups milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 TBS honey
2 tsp baking powder (preferably non aluminum)
2 eggs
3/4 cup whole wheat flour

My mother always adds either fresh or frozen blueberries

great way to start your day with whole grain fiber!

We eat it several days a week around here... hope you enjoy it.

Free form ramblings

Well, I DID manage to get up at 5:30 this morning and go row for 30 minutes. Yay for me. Found it hard to get into a good rhythm - the hardest thing about rowing, or running or biking for me is that lack of mental stimulation while I'm doing it. I get bored. And yes the T.V. was on but I pretty much hate T.V.
Going to have to figure that one out I guess.
It looks like I have another day of laundry, laundry and more laundry ahead of me. I never quite caught back up after the stomach flu thing - I just did loads of bedding there for a week and a half and the clothes piled up!
I miss the days when Holidays were MY vacation and I laid around and read books.
My absolute favorite was in college, I drove home from school in MA and my mother, baby sister and step father had gone to the step father's mother's house in the Blue Ridge Mountains and gotten snowed in. I went to the kennel and picked up the dog and he and I had spaghetti and wine and sat in front of the fire and I caught up on my non school reading. It was the BEST Holiday ever.
But anyway - I am about 1/2 way done with uncluttering my desk as well. So I'll be doing that in between loads of laundry. And I'm planning M-Lyons 4 year old Birthday.
"Fancy Nancy" is our current hero. So it will be a "Fancy Birthday" which I think means lots of pink and accessories. Perhaps we will decorate cupcakes and make crowns... and send them all home relatively shortly...
Off to find my coffee and make Grandpa Howie's Pancakes
